Meet the Hearts Behind the Mission

Who We Are

Founded in 2014, our rescue began as a heartfelt response to the overwhelming stray animal crisis in Puerto Rico. The situation was heartbreaking, and it seemed like very few people were stepping in to help. Since then, we’ve made it our mission to provide love, care, and second chances to animals in need.

Our Impact

Over the years, we’ve rescued close to 5,000 animals, especially during times of crisis like Hurricane Maria. After the hurricane, we coordinated massive evacuation efforts, sending hundreds of animals to safety on each flight. From skydiving planes repurposed for rescue missions to otter planes packed with animals, we’ve faced logistical challenges head-on to ensure these animals find safe and loving homes.

Janalle

Founder

Janalle founded the rescue in 2014, driven by her deep compassion for animals and the overwhelming stray animal crisis in Puerto Rico. Having lived on the island for nearly 19 years, she has fallen in love with its ocean, culture, and vibrant community. Alongside her Puerto Rican husband, Janalle has raised two bilingual children who embrace their roots and share her love for animals. Her passion for rescue work is evident not only in her mission but also in her personal life—Janalle’s family includes five pets, all rescued from the island.

Fun fact: her dog Brody is the inspiration behind the rescue’s logo!

During Hurricane Maria, Janalle went above and beyond, sheltering 18 dogs in her home, including newborn puppies and their mother rescued just before the storm hit. Her resilience and determination have helped transform the lives of countless animals, and her vision continues to guide the rescue’s efforts.

Nitza

Founder

Nitza is the cornerstone of our rescue, serving as Vice President and a tireless advocate for the animals of Puerto Rico. Born and raised on the island, she has spent her 42 years embracing its stunning landscapes and beaches while also confronting the harsh realities faced by stray animals. Her dedication to rescue work is deeply personal, and her home is a haven for seven rescue dogs. Two of these dogs became permanent family members due to health or breed restrictions, and Nitza lovingly calls them FTLOS lifers.

One of Nitza’s most remarkable efforts was during Spayathon, when she housed 51 dogs in her home for over a month while assisting another rescue organization. Her compassion, strength, and unwavering commitment make her an invaluable part of our mission.

Fun fact: When Nitza and Janalle first met, they faced a language barrier—Nitza spoke no English, and Janalle barely spoke Spanish. Through determination and their shared love for animals, they built an incredible partnership that continues to drive the success of our rescue.

Unforgettable Stories

Our rescue journey has been full of unforgettable moments that showcase the lengths we go to for the animals of Puerto Rico. During Hurricane Maria, Janalle opened her home to 18 dogs, including newborn puppies and their mother, providing them with shelter amidst the chaos of the storm.

Nitza’s dedication was equally inspiring when she cared for 51 dogs in her home for over a month while supporting another rescue after Spayathon.

One of the most memorable stories involves Tomás Trampa, a seemingly lifeless puppy Nitza rescued. The moment she whistled, he sprang to life and hopped into her car, as if he knew he’d just been given a second chance. These experiences remind us why we do what we do and inspire us to keep going.
