Frequently Asked Questions

What is the adoption fee?
Our adoption fee is $150 for dogs being transferred off the island, which includes all their vetting and sterilization. For dogs adopted locally on the island, the fee is also $150, covering the same care. Cat adoptions are $75 and include vaccines and sterilization.
That said, what we care about most is that our animals go to loving, safe homes. Please don’t let the adoption fee stop you from applying—if you’re ready to give an animal a forever home, we’re happy to work with you.
Where can I have the dog transferred to?
This depends on airline regulations and the size of the dog. For smaller dogs, we can usually find volunteer flyers to take them almost anywhere in the U.S. Cargo transport is trickier, especially since it’s weather-dependent. Consistent cargo destinations are Florida and New Jersey. That said, if someone is truly committed to adopting a dog, we do our best to make it happen—we’ve even had a driver take dogs from Miami to new homes!
What kind of vaccinations do the dogs have?
All our animals are vaccinated according to their age:
- Dogs: DHLPP, Bordetella, and Rabies
- Cats: FVRCP, Leukemia, and Rabies
Are the dogs spayed/neutered?
Yes! If they’re old enough, all dogs and cats are spayed or neutered before adoption.
What is your process of returning the dog, if it isn't a good fit?
We always want what’s best for both the dog and the family. If a dog isn’t a good fit, our contract states that it’s the adopter’s responsibility to cover the cost of returning the dog to Puerto Rico. In some cases, we’ve worked with adopters to foster the dog temporarily while we coordinate with our partner organizations in their area.
Every situation is unique, which is why we handle these matters with care and flexibility.
